Software Engineer Cover Letter Example
Two openings, a full body paragraph, and a closing you can adapt — plus what this specific hiring reader is actually looking for.
Engineering hiring managers are the most likely of any profession to skip the cover letter entirely — so the ones who do read it are looking for something specific: evidence you understand what their team actually builds, and a reason to believe you want this job rather than any job.
That means the letter should be short and technical. Two or three paragraphs referencing their product, their stack, or a genuine engineering problem they have written about publicly will outperform a page of enthusiasm every time.
What a software engineer cover letter has to include
- A concrete reference to their product, stack, or an engineering post they published
- One system you built, with its scale, that maps to their problem
- Why this team specifically — not why you like software
- Links to GitHub or production work, if they are worth opening
Opening lines
The first sentence is the hardest one to write and the only one guaranteed to be read. Both of these skip the throat-clearing and start with something specific.
I read your engineering post on cutting cold-start latency in your ingestion pipeline, which is close to a problem I spent last year on — moving our order pipeline to idempotent Kafka consumers took sustained throughput from 400 to 2,800 events per second.
I have been using your API in a side project for six months, which is an unusual way to arrive at a job application but does mean I already know where the pagination gets awkward.
The evidence paragraph
This is the middle of the letter and where the actual argument lives. Swap in your own facts — the structure is what matters.
For the last four years I have owned backend services at a company processing about 2.4M events a day. The work I am proudest of is unglamorous: a read-through cache that cut p95 checkout latency from 1.8s to 340ms, a zero-downtime migration of a 900GB Postgres table, and a set of contract tests that took integration-related production incidents from eleven a quarter to two. I have also been on call for eight services, which has shaped how I design more than any book has — I write things I am willing to be woken up for.
Closing
Short, specific about next steps, and without the phrase “I look forward to hearing from you.”
