Investment Banker Resume Example & Guide

A real example, 8 bullet points you can copy, salary ranges, and the specific things that get investment banker resumes rejected.

Investment banking resumes follow the strictest format conventions in any profession, and deviating from them is read as not knowing the industry. One page without exception through the associate level, deals listed with size and your specific role, education at the top with GPA and test scores while you are early.

Deal experience is the entire currency. Transaction type, size, sector, your role, and outcome — those five facts per deal are what a staffer reads. Announced and closed deals count most; pitched and unclosed work can be listed as such but never implied to have closed.

Technical precision matters. LBO, DCF, comparable company analysis, precedent transactions, and accretion/dilution are named specifically because interviewers will test each one, and vague modelling claims collapse quickly under questioning.

Put education at the top — for now

While you have less than about a year of professional experience, education is legitimately your strongest section. Include your degree, institution, graduation date, relevant coursework, honours, and GPA if it is 3.5 or above. Once you have a year of work behind you, move it to the bottom and leave it there.

  • Deal list with size, type, sector, and your specific contribution
  • Modelling depth: LBO, DCF, merger models built from scratch
  • School, GPA, and test scores early in your career

Investment Banker resume summary example

Three to four sentences at the top of the page, written in the first person without saying “I”. Rewrite it for every application — the summary is the cheapest place to show you read the job description.

Investment banking analyst in a technology coverage group with 3 years and 9 closed transactions totalling $4.2B in deal value. Built the operating and merger models on 6 of them, ran diligence coordination across 40+ workstreams on the largest, and drafted the CIMs that went to buyers. Series 79 and 63.

8 investment banker resume bullet points you can adapt

Applicant tracking systems match literal strings. Work the ones that genuinely apply to you into your summary, skills section, and bullets — and never into white text or a hidden block, which every modern system detects and most employers treat as disqualifying.

Section-by-section breakdown

Structure a dedicated deal list

Transaction, size, sector, your role, status. This is the section a staffer reads first, and a well-formatted deal list does more than any amount of prose about your responsibilities.

One page, no exceptions, through associate

Banking has the most rigid length convention of any industry. A two-page analyst resume is read as a signal that you do not know the norms, before the content is even assessed.

Keep education at the top early

School, degree, GPA, and SAT or GMAT scores if strong, until roughly three years in. This is contrary to general resume advice and specific to this industry's screening.

Mistakes that sink investment banker resumes

These are the failure modes specific to this role — not general resume advice you have already read a dozen times.

  • Listing pitched deals as though they closed. It is checked, it is remembered, and it ends candidacies.
  • Vague modelling claims. Say which models you built from scratch versus maintained, because interviewers will test the difference.
  • Exceeding one page as an analyst.
  • Omitting deal sizes, which is the primary scale signal in banking.
  • Generic finance language in place of the industry's specific vocabulary.

Frequently asked questions

Network aggressively, get any transaction-adjacent experience — valuation, transaction advisory, corporate development — and build modelling proof you can demonstrate. Boutique and middle-market firms are the realistic entry point and hire far more flexibly.
