Accountant Cover Letter Example
Two openings, a full body paragraph, and a closing you can adapt — plus what this specific hiring reader is actually looking for.
Accounting cover letters are read by controllers who want to know three things quickly: your CPA status, the size of the books you have handled, and whether you close on time. A letter that answers all three in the first paragraph has done most of its job.
Beyond that, the differentiator is process improvement. Every accountant reconciles and closes; the ones who get interviewed are the ones who made a close faster, an audit cleaner, or a control tighter.
What a accountant cover letter has to include
- CPA status — licensed, candidate with parts passed, or eligible
- Entity scale: revenue, entity count, transaction volume
- Close cycle length and any improvement you drove
- The ERP they named in the posting
Opening lines
The first sentence is the hardest one to write and the only one guaranteed to be read. Both of these skip the throat-clearing and start with something specific.
I am a CPA closing the books for a $180M manufacturer across four entities, and I took our monthly close from twelve business days to five. I would like to bring that to your senior accountant role.
Your posting mentions a NetSuite implementation that is still bedding in. I led the accounting workstream of exactly that migration last year, including the chart of accounts mapping, and we went live without delaying a close.
The evidence paragraph
This is the middle of the letter and where the actual argument lives. Swap in your own facts — the structure is what matters.
My current role covers the full close for four legal entities, including intercompany eliminations and foreign currency translation. The close reduction came from two unglamorous things: a proper pre-close accrual review and automating recurring journal entries, which removed about thirty hours of manual entry per cycle. I also rebuilt the fixed asset subledger after finding a $1.4M depreciation misstatement, and implemented the monthly rollforward that prevents it recurring. We have had no audit adjustments in the last two annual audits, and I am the primary contact for the external auditors.
Closing
Short, specific about next steps, and without the phrase “I look forward to hearing from you.”
I would welcome the chance to discuss your close process and where the pressure points are. Thank you for considering my application.
Match the letter to your resume
The Anchor cover letter template pairs with the matching resume design, so the two documents arrive looking like they belong together — which is a small thing that reads as professionalism.
Mistakes to avoid
- Describing the accounting cycle as though it were an achievement.
- Omitting CPA status, even if you are only partway through — say where you are.
- No entity scale, leaving your level ambiguous.
- Failing to name the ERP, which is frequently a hard filter.
Frequently asked questions
Should I mention I am still working toward my CPA?
Yes, specifically: parts passed and the date of your next sitting. It is far stronger than silence and reads as commitment rather than absence.
How do I write this moving from public accounting to industry?
Lead with the fact that you have seen more close processes than almost anyone in industry has. Name the client industries, the systems, and any process improvements you recommended — that is the translation controllers respond to.
Write the resume first
A cover letter cannot rescue a weak resume — and the two should not repeat each other. The Accountant resume guide covers the salary ranges, ATS keywords, and 8 bullet points that belong on the resume, so this letter can do something different.
