Analyst cover letters should demonstrate the thing analysts are hired for: turning a finding into a recommendation someone can act on. A letter that describes a piece of analysis and the decision it drove is a working sample of the job.
It is also the place to establish SQL depth without the resume's list-like constraints — describing a specific query problem you solved reads far better than a skills bullet.
What a data analyst cover letter has to include

Opening lines
The first sentence is the hardest one to write and the only one guaranteed to be read. Both of these skip the throat-clearing and start with something specific.

The evidence paragraph
This is the middle of the letter and where the actual argument lives. Swap in your own facts — the structure is what matters.
Most of my value has come from ending arguments rather than producing reports. When finance and marketing were reporting different revenue numbers every month, I consolidated fourteen fragmented reports into four dashboards with agreed metric definitions, and the dispute stopped. I write SQL daily against 200M-row tables — window functions, CTEs, and enough query tuning to keep the warehouse bill reasonable — and I automate what I can, including a six-hour weekly Excel process I replaced with a scheduled job. I also try to be honest about what the data does not show: I called six of twenty-two A/B tests inconclusive despite positive point estimates, and two of those would have been bad launches.
Closing
Short, specific about next steps, and without the phrase “I look forward to hearing from you.”
