Engineering cover letters work best when they are concrete about products that shipped. Design work that stopped at review is much weaker evidence, and hiring managers read for the distinction immediately.
The other thing worth establishing is manufacturing literacy. An engineer who designs parts that can actually be made — and who has stood on a factory floor while they were — is meaningfully more valuable than one who has only worked in CAD.
What a mechanical engineer cover letter has to include
