For a new graduate, the cover letter carries more weight than at any later career stage, because everyone in the applicant pool has a similar resume. What differentiates you is evidence of genuine interest and of having done something with your own initiative.
The single most effective thing you can do is be specific about the company. Most graduate applications are visibly mass-produced, so a letter that references their actual work stands out immediately.
What a recent graduate cover letter has to include
- The specific role and why this company
- One project or job described with a real outcome
- Evidence of reliability — work held alongside study
- Enthusiasm that is grounded in something concrete
Opening lines
The first sentence is the hardest one to write and the only one guaranteed to be read. Both of these skip the throat-clearing and start with something specific.
I am applying for your business analyst programme. My capstone project was a market entry analysis for a local manufacturer, and they adopted the recommendation — which is when I decided this was the work I wanted to do.
I have followed your company since your product hit our campus, and I used it to build the course-scheduling tool that about 400 students now use each registration period. I would like to apply for the associate role you posted.
The evidence paragraph
This is the middle of the letter and where the actual argument lives. Swap in your own facts — the structure is what matters.
The experience I would point to is my marketing internship last summer, where I produced a competitive analysis across eight companies and two of my three recommendations were implemented in the following quarter's campaign. Alongside my degree I worked 25 hours a week and kept a 3.7 GPA, which is less impressive than it sounds but does mean I know how to manage a schedule. I also ran a 40-member student organisation as president, grew membership 60%, and organised an event that raised $8,400 for a local charity — the largest total our chapter had done. None of that makes me experienced, but I think it makes me a reasonable bet.
Closing
Short, specific about next steps, and without the phrase “I look forward to hearing from you.”
