Sales Representative Cover Letter Example
Two openings, a full body paragraph, and a closing you can adapt — plus what this specific hiring reader is actually looking for.
A sales cover letter is a sales call in writing, and hiring managers read it exactly that way. If you cannot open with something that earns the next thirty seconds, that is data about how you open with prospects.
The content is simple and non-negotiable: quota, attainment, ranking. A sales letter without numbers is read as a sales rep without numbers worth mentioning.
What a sales representative cover letter has to include
- Quota size, attainment percentage, and ranking
- Deal size and sales cycle, so they can judge motion fit
- Whether you generate your own pipeline
- Something specific about their product or market
Opening lines
The first sentence is the hardest one to write and the only one guaranteed to be read. Both of these skip the throat-clearing and start with something specific.
I closed 142% of a $1.4M quota last year, ranked 3 of 40 nationally, and self-generated about 60% of that pipeline. I would like to do the same in your territory.
I have sold against you twice in the last year and lost one of them on your integration story. I would rather be on that side of the conversation.
The evidence paragraph
This is the middle of the letter and where the actual argument lives. Swap in your own facts — the structure is what matters.
My numbers over three years are 118%, 131%, and 142% of quota, through a territory realignment and a competitor's aggressive price move. The territory itself went from $780K to $1.9M, and that growth came from mapping the 140 accounts that actually fit our best-customer profile and working them systematically rather than chasing whatever came inbound. My average deal is $28K on a 60-day cycle across four to six stakeholders. I also disqualify earlier than most reps — my win rate went from 22% to 34% mostly by walking away from deals that were never going to close, which freed about a day a week for the ones that would.
Closing
Short, specific about next steps, and without the phrase “I look forward to hearing from you.”
I would like fifteen minutes to hear what the territory looks like and where you think the ceiling is. I am available this week or next.
Match the letter to your resume
The Granite cover letter template pairs with the matching resume design, so the two documents arrive looking like they belong together — which is a small thing that reads as professionalism.
Mistakes to avoid
- "Consistently exceeded targets" with no numbers, which every reader interprets as having no numbers worth stating.
- Revenue without quota, so attainment cannot be judged.
- A generic opening, in the one role where openings are the skill.
- No mention of whether your pipeline was self-generated or provided.
Frequently asked questions
What if I missed quota last year?
Give the context — territory change, quota increase, market conditions — and lead with what you did well: pipeline built, win rate, largest deals, new logos. Every sales manager has had that year.
Is it too aggressive to open with a challenge?
In sales, a confident opening is usually read as appropriate rather than arrogant, as long as it is specific and true. Match the tone to the company — enterprise and startup cultures differ considerably.
Write the resume first
A cover letter cannot rescue a weak resume — and the two should not repeat each other. The Sales Representative resume guide covers the salary ranges, ATS keywords, and 8 bullet points that belong on the resume, so this letter can do something different.
