Graphic Designer Cover Letter Example
Two openings, a full body paragraph, and a closing you can adapt — plus what this specific hiring reader is actually looking for.
Design cover letters are competing with the portfolio for the reviewer's attention, and they will lose. So the letter should be short and do the one thing the portfolio cannot: explain how you work — turnaround, volume, collaboration, and how you handle feedback.
A specific observation about their visual identity is the strongest possible opening. It proves you looked, which is more than most applicants can claim.
What a graphic designer cover letter has to include
- The portfolio link, immediately
- Your production volume and typical turnaround
- A specific, accurate observation about their brand or work
- Evidence you can work inside an existing brand system
Opening lines
The first sentence is the hardest one to write and the only one guaranteed to be read. Both of these skip the throat-clearing and start with something specific.
Your packaging refresh last year did something I liked a lot — the typographic hierarchy survived the shrink down to the small-format SKUs, which most refreshes do not. Portfolio: [link].
I produce about 40 on-brand assets a month across digital, print, and packaging on a 48-hour standard turnaround. Portfolio is linked above; here is how I work.
The evidence paragraph
This is the middle of the letter and where the actual argument lives. Swap in your own facts — the structure is what matters.
I have been in-house at a consumer brand for six years, which means most of my work is inside a system rather than inventing one. I led the visual rollout of our rebrand across 200-plus touchpoints in five months without slipping the schedule, and I built the Figma template library that lets marketing self-serve about 60% of routine requests — which cut our design queue roughly in half and made the work I do more interesting. On the results side, my packaging redesign for the core line correlated with a 14% lift in retail sell-through after the shelf reset. I take feedback well and I would rather get a rough concept in front of people early than protect it until it is finished.
Closing
Short, specific about next steps, and without the phrase “I look forward to hearing from you.”
Happy to walk through any piece in the portfolio and the brief behind it. Thanks for taking a look.
Match the letter to your resume
The Palette cover letter template pairs with the matching resume design, so the two documents arrive looking like they belong together — which is a small thing that reads as professionalism.
Mistakes to avoid
- Burying or omitting the portfolio link — it is the most important thing in the letter.
- A long letter. The reviewer wants to get to the work.
- Generic praise for the brand with no specific observation.
- Only showing concept work when employers need evidence you can work inside a system.
Frequently asked questions
Should my cover letter be visually designed?
Keep it clean and readable. A heavily designed letter competes with your portfolio and often parses badly through applicant tracking systems. Let the portfolio carry the craft.
How short is too short?
For design roles, three tight paragraphs is ideal and even two can work if they are specific. Reviewers want to reach the portfolio — do not stand in the way.
Write the resume first
A cover letter cannot rescue a weak resume — and the two should not repeat each other. The Graphic Designer resume guide covers the salary ranges, ATS keywords, and 8 bullet points that belong on the resume, so this letter can do something different.
