CNA hiring moves faster than almost any other clinical role, and that speed shapes what a resume needs to do. Facilities are usually filling a shift, not building a career track, so the details that get you called are the practical ones: active certification and registry number, the shifts you can work, and whether you can start now. Bury any of those and a faster resume gets the call.

The part most CNA resumes get wrong is scale. 'Assisted patients with activities of daily living' is true of every CNA who has ever worked, and it tells a hiring manager nothing. 'Provided direct care for 12–14 residents per shift on a 60-bed skilled nursing unit' tells them exactly whether you can handle their floor. Patient load, facility type, and population are the numbers that matter.

CNA work is also the most common on-ramp into nursing, and resumes should be honest about that without apologising for it. If you are in an LPN or RN programme, say so with your expected graduation — many employers run tuition assistance and actively prefer candidates on that path.

Put education at the top — for now

While you have less than about a year of professional experience, education is legitimately your strongest section. Include your degree, institution, graduation date, relevant coursework, honours, and GPA if it is 3.5 or above. Once you have a year of work behind you, move it to the bottom and leave it there.

  • Active CNA certification with state and registry number, plus expiration
  • Patient load per shift and facility type — SNF, hospital, assisted living, home health
  • Population experience: dementia, bariatric, post-surgical, hospice, rehab

Certified Nursing Assistant resume summary example

Three to four sentences at the top of the page, written in the first person without saying “I”. Rewrite it for every application — the summary is the cheapest place to show you read the job description.

9 certified nursing assistant resume bullet points you can adapt

Copy any of these and replace the specifics with your own. The numbers here are realistic examples, not claims to borrow — swap in what actually happened, because you will be asked about every figure on your resume.

  • Provide direct care for 12–14 residents per shift on a 60-bed skilled nursing unit, including bathing, dressing, toileting, feeding, and mobility assistance.
  • Perform full-assist and mechanical-lift transfers using Hoyer and sit-to-stand equipment; zero resident or staff injuries recorded across 4 years.
  • Support 20+ residents with moderate to severe dementia, using redirection and validation techniques that reduced documented behavioural escalations on the unit by roughly a third.
  • Take and chart vital signs, intake and output, and weights for the full resident assignment each shift, escalating changes in condition to the charge nurse.
  • Maintained perfect attendance across 2 years of consecutive night shifts and regularly picked up short-notice coverage during staffing shortages.
  • Trained and shadowed 9 new CNAs through facility orientation, covering transfer safety, charting standards, and the electronic point-of-care system.
  • Provided end-of-life care for hospice residents, including comfort positioning, mouth care, and family support during active dying.
  • Contributed to a unit falls-reduction push through hourly rounding and proactive toileting; unit falls dropped 28% over two quarters.
  • Assisted licensed nursing staff with wound care, catheter care, and post-operative monitoring within CNA scope of practice.

Section-by-section breakdown

Certification and registry number go in the header

State, registry or certificate number, and expiration date, in the top third. Long-term care employers verify against the state nurse aide registry before an interview, and a resume that makes that easy moves first.

Quantify your assignment

Residents or patients per shift, unit bed count, and facility type. This single number tells a hiring manager more about whether you can handle their floor than any list of duties, and almost no CNA resume includes it.

State your availability explicitly

Nights, weekends, holidays, doubles, on-call. CNA hiring is shift-driven, and open availability is a genuine competitive advantage worth putting in writing rather than waiting to be asked about.

Mistakes that sink certified nursing assistant resumes

These are the failure modes specific to this role — not general resume advice you have already read a dozen times.

  • Listing ADLs with no patient load or facility type — the phrase is on every CNA resume and differentiates none of them.
  • Omitting the registry number, which forces the employer to search for you and slows a process that moves in days.
  • Hiding dementia, hospice, or bariatric experience inside a generic job description when those are specifically staffed and specifically hard to fill.
  • Apologising for being in nursing school. Employers with tuition assistance treat it as a retention signal, not a flight risk.
  • Leaving out attendance and reliability. In a role where call-outs are the industry's biggest staffing problem, a documented attendance record is a real credential.

Frequently asked questions

One page. CNA hiring is fast and high-volume, and a reviewer is scanning for certification, patient load, and availability. A second page almost always means duties have been repeated across positions rather than more useful information added.
